Learning about other cultures: Tonga

Last week ( November 12), in ICT, we split the class in two.

One group searched google images for photos of Tonga and saved them into a special folder.

Group Two imported these photos into Kidspix, added their own drawing on top of the photo and recorded their thoughts on what they had learnt as they had studied Tonga.

This was all done in class time and it's not easy having your voice recorded on the spot like that!
See below for some of the results of our work........

3 dimensional Geometry in Room 14

We used play dough to model 3d shapes of cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders and cones. Then in our groups we first discussed, and then decided how to form a construction using all our shapes.

A few stars in Rm 14 (seeing it's Matariki!)

Unpicking the Past at Town Acre 445

We went to the Museum to discover and experience what life might have been like for the new settlers who arrived in Nelson on the early ships in the 1840's and 1850's. We are learning about places of significance in Nelson and how the past has influenced what makes Nelson a special place.

Jigsaw puzzle

Room 14 children have been having fun constructing 2 different versions of a large, over 3 feet tall jigsaw puzzle of 100 pieces. Great work little ones! This puzzle is taller than you!

Term 2

In Geometry we have been learning about shapes. Here is our mural of Rm 14's ZOO OF SHAPES. We had a lot of fun using squares, ovals, triangles, squares, rectangles, pentagons and hexagons to make animals.

There were peacocks, elephants, pigs, cats, caterpillars, mice, lions, tucans, pelicans, butterflies and ladybirds at our zoo!

Popping Popcorn!

We made a class book about the steps we took to pop popcorn! It is in our classroom for us to read! It was crunchy! It was very yummy to eat!

Botanics for lunch!

We have a map of Central Nelson on our wall in Room 14. We use it to see where we are going for our walks.

We walked to the Botanics to have lunch and play in the Autumn leaves!
Everyone bet Vairi in the running race!
We made a pile of leaves as tall as Lesley!

Wild, Wet, Windy Wednesday

It was windy at my aunty’s house and her power line fell down. My grandad’s ute nearly got crushed but it didn’t. A big tree nearly fell over on it and it will have to be cut down. Levi

On Wednesday there was a storm and a falling tree thundered down. Mum and I stayed inside.

Wild, Wet, Windy Wednesday

On Wednesday the wind was thumping and thundering, and ripping off roofs. It was a heck of a windy day. I thought it was a whistly Wednesday. Saffron

Wild, Wet, Windy Wednesday

Sh…sh…sh…sh…sh…sh…sh…sh…sh…sh…sh…went the wind up-rooting the trees. When I fell over I said, “Mum help me! It is so windy!” “I know!” said mum. The next day I said to mum, “Can I have another umbrella?” and she said, “OK.” I said, “Yay!” Madison

WILD WET WINDY WEDNESDAY

When I looked outside at the beach the waves were crashing and bashing on the rocks. It was wild and exciting, windy and noisy.

On Wednesday there was a big stom. I was not at school all the day because the gusty wind blew the door shut and it jammed my finger. It hurt a lot. I went to the sick bay and later my mum came and picked me up and took me home. I was watching TV and suddenly the power went off.

The wild wind whacking the windows.
Our power did not come back until teatime.

Wild, wet, windy Wednesday
Hear the rain pitter-patter,
Out comes a rainbow.
See the clouds going away,
I put my wet brolly down
And go to town.

On Wednesday it was whistly week because it was windy and whistling. It was ripping off roofs. Whisss! Whosss! went the howling wind and rain. The electricity went off. It was dark and scary at my dad’s house. We had to have candles. By Grace.

Wild, Wet, Windy Wednesday

Wild, wet, windy Wednesday
Whistle, whistle, whistle
Trees falling down in front of me,
See the branches whirl around
Dropping down to the ground.

SWIMMING

The swimming season was unfortunately short for because the little pool was out of commission. So we only managed to have one or two swims each week. We learned many different things including doggie paddle (for survival).

Some kids just love swimming!

Beautiful star fish, lovely floating skills.

Ezekiel submerges for the first time!! Joy! Success!

A swimming champion in the making - we called it "froggy swim", however it's the start of breastroke, and was successfully achieved by a number of the children.

Brrrr....... yes, lesson over, shivering in the sun!

Delaware Bay

The wreck of the Delaware

Room 14 visited the Suter Art Gallery to view Sally Burton's exhibition depicting the historic story of the wreck of the sailing ship 'Delaware'. The interactive display and the story captured the imaginations of every child.

The children created their own art works using black and white pastels to feature two of the main people involved, Huria and Hemi Matenga.

We retold the story as a class shared activity in written expression.

There was high interest in actually visiting what is now known as Delaware Bay to experience the area of the wreck, and to locate the iwi burial site at the end of the spit.
